Training

Training grants are awarded to individuals for the purpose of furthering on-the-job training, completing certified vocational courses. In some instances training grants may be given to corporations or businesses for the training of their employees. Whether you need the training grants as an individual or corporation there are a few websites that can assist you in your research and training grant submission.

The most common online system for searching federal grants for training opportunities is www.grants.gov. All federal organizations streamline their grant applications through this system. It is imperative to register with the system several weeks in advance of the federal training grant’s deadline! Some of the information you must enter into grants.gov is identification information from other agencies. Your business must be pre-registered with Dunn and Brad Street and with CCR (Central Contractor Registration). After you have received your identification number from Dunn and Brad Street and completed the CCR, you can complete the www.grants.gov registration and be on your way to applying for training grants. Be careful to allow for enough time to complete everything required and have the system verify the information.

It may be necessary to contact the granting agency directly with questions concerning the training grant application. It is important to download the instructions and application packet to your computer for review several weeks or months in advance of the training grant application deadline. Many businesses submitting a training grant application do not even make it to the review panel because of required information that is not submitted along with the application.

Corporate Sponsorship is another form of training grants. In this instance, a corporation will either offer existing employees the opportunity to further their education with a training grant or will offer training grant to an undergraduate student to secure a future employee. The restrictions on corporate sponsorship are placed on the training grant by the corporation to guarantee a benefit to both parties. An existing employee would usually be required to remain an employee for X number of years or funds must be repaid.

Businesses looking for training grants should contact the State Economic Development Department or local government offices for information. If you qualify for the business training grant, complete the application carefully, submit all required information and documentation, write the grant narratives in a clear and compelling manner; you are well on your way to reaping the benefits of applying for a training grant!
